What to walk in 2009? I’m beginning to give some thought to this year’s project(s).
Maybe something fairly gentle in the spring to get the calf muscles working; the Windermere Way looks like it might fit the bill. First I’ll have to up my fitness. I was reasonably fit on my arrival at Robin Hood’s Bay in mid September, but now, I’m afraid, “Lethargy Rules, OK!” (Must dig the boots out of the shed…).
In late summer I'd like to tackle something a bit more demanding: the Two Moors Way in Devon (as recommended by Devon Brian on last year’s Coast to Coast walk) might fit the bill, or maybe the Offa's Dyke National Trail along the England/Wales border.
Other routes in the Dales and Lakes are still in the running mind: the Dales High Way looks interesting (I’ve got as far as buying the book), or perhaps re-walking all, or part, of the Pennine Way.
None of the candidate walks appear to have an affordable bag transfer service for solo hikers. Whilst carrying a day pack presented no problems last year, I have some fears that hauling a fully loaded rucksack might tempt a renewed sciatica attack. My Cumbria Way outing in 2007 did precede the last bout. The only way to find out, I guess, is to suck it and see.
First though – back to the day walks.
